Sharing your stories is a powerful way to connect with others who are breaking down barriers and increasing understanding and respect in their schools.

Tell us your story and hear from other student activists who are working for change in their school communities. Mix It Up publishes stories by and about students, as well as tips and ideas to support activist efforts.

Each month the Mix It Up E-Newsletter will spotlight new and engaging topics as well as a new quote of the month. Write from your personal experiences about social boundaries as they relate to these topics or quotes, and submit your story online. Here are some upcoming issues:

  • October:
    • Question: Have you ever or would you ever be an advocate for a cause - if so, what would that cause be and how would you advocate on its behalf?
    • Quote: "If you want peace, work for justice." - Pope Paul VI
  • November:
    • Question: In what ways do you hope our new president will ensure a more tolerant society?
    • Quote: "Tolerance is giving to every other human being every right that you claim for yourself." - Robert Green Ingersoll
  • December:
    • Question: What is your personal position on equal rights to education?
    • Quote: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

There are just a few rules ...

  • We're looking for 500-750 words.
  • Include your name, grade level and e-mail address.
  • Choose your words wisely. Slurs and profanity don't necessarily make the story better.
  • We need parent/guardian permission if you're under 18. We'll send you a form if your submission is selected. Just fill it out and send it back, even if you get published anonymously or under a screen name.

If you have questions, call us at (334) 956-8200 or go ahead and send us your story.

If snail mail is your thing, send your story (with return address) to:
